The Big Adventure Guide of Things to See & Do in NYC - Bars, Taverns, Ale Houses, Watering Holes and more Bars

The Big Adventure recently hosted an event in NYC that brought scores of people to town. We had gathered some recommendations of various places to see and go for first time visitors and seasoned travelers alike. In the end, we had a list of restaurants, bars, activities, and museums  that are unique to New York City, relatively inexpensive and eye-opening. In short, A Big Adventure "Best Of" list. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing some of our suggestions here…

Looking for something to drink? Some of our beloved bars...

Ear Inn
326 Spring Street (between Greenwich and Washington Streets)

With a legitimate claim to possibly being New York City’s oldest bar, this historic tavern has a welcoming crowd and a unique feel. Crowded at happy hour, but cozy most other times, it’s a great local spot for conversation and drinks.  Because it is located almost on the Hudson, it can be a little harder to find, but worth the effort.

Stout
133 W. 33rd Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues)

One of the largest bars in the city, Stout is just steps away from Macy’s, The Empire State Building and Madison Square Garden. By New York standards, this is an unfathomably huge space that serves top notch Pub Fare. In an area that’s packed with tourists, this is a great place to rest your feet, recharge and get some food.

Stone Street
Between Coenties Aly and Hanover Square

Not just one bar, but rather a series of bars and restaurants on a surprisingly cute cobblestone street in the middle of downtown. Many bars seem similar, but Ulysses
is our personal favorites. If you find yourselves down by Wall Street, Battery Park and World Trade Center Area, this is a great place to stop, enjoy outdoor (or indoor) dining and watch the happy hour crowd.

The Pony Bar
637 10th Avenue (between 45th and 46th Streets)

A Beer Bar in the most traditional sense of the term. The taps have all domestic craft beers that are hand chosen and all pints are $5. A fun atmosphere packed with a welcoming crowd who share a common bond of sincerely enjoying beer. Good snacks on hand as well. Don’t forget: when you hear the bell ring, join the other patrons by yelling out “New Beer!”

Guide of Things to See & Do in NYC - Best of Brunch

The Big Adventure recently hosted an event in NYC that brought scores of people to town. We had gathered some recommendations of various places to see and go for first time visitors and seasoned travelers alike. In the end, we had a list of restaurants, bars, activities, and museums  that are unique to New York City, relatively inexpensive and eye-opening. In short, A Big Adventure "Best Of" list. Weekend Mornings + New York City's Best Brunches = Happiness

Sarah Beth’s
423 Amsterdam Avenue (between and 80th and 81st Streets) – Multiple Locations

Brunch Option #1—Always packed, but New Yorkers are a late rising brunch crowd, so if you can arrive before 9:30 AM, you can enjoy the amazing homemade muffins, jams and jellies without too long a wait.  Sarah Beth’s has a delicious menu filled with unique creations and exotic drinks.

Good Enough To Eat
483 Amsterdam Avenue (between 83rd and 84th Streets)

Brunch Option #2—Restaurant on the smaller sides that serves country styled breakfasts complete with long lines just outside. Fret not, the line moves quickly especially if you’re a mere party of two. Once inside, enjoy the friendly staff and signature dishes such as the Lumber Jill, granola and more.

Kitchennette
156 Chambers Street (between Hudson Street and Broadway)- Morningside Heights location as well

Brunch Option #3—So cute, we could almost vomit. But they back it up with tasty affordable meals and chocolate milk served in a mason jar.  They have great breakfast options that will keep you full for all of your touring of the city!

Guide of Things to See & Do in NYC Continued - Indulge in Some American Classics

Fantastic Food Options Continued

Shake Shack
Southeast Corner of Madison Square Park (Near Madison Avenue and E. 23rd St.) -Multiple Locations

This world famous burger and shake joint was originally founded as part of a city initiative in Madison Square Park.  Due to its delicious burgers and creamy milkshakes, they have continued to expand and even have a location at Citi Field and in Dubai.   Yes, the lines may scare you away, but if you’re feeling the urge for a quality burger and want to visit a NYC staple, it is 100% worth it.

Five Napkin Burger
630 9th Avenue (between 44th and 45th Streets) – Multiple Locations

The burger you’ll find here is much different than any fast-food burger…this is a burger experience.  It truly does require 5 napkins as the juices are guaranteed to run down your fingers and make a delicious mess.  You can stop in or make a reservation, but either way, if you are looking for a more gourmet burger, this is a great bet.

Crif Dogs
113 St. Mark’s Place (between 1st Avenue and Avenue A)- Location in Brooklyn as well

You may be used to having hot dogs over the campfire or at a ball game, but these are like no other hot dogs you’ve had before.  Billed as “NYC's Number 1 Weiner", Cirf Dogs come wrapped in bacon, covered in avocado, or even smothered in mayo and sliced pickles.  No matter what, these tasty dogs are definitely something you’ll remember from your trip to the city. Side bonus: you can watch people attempt to get into somewhat secret bar PDT via a phone booth in the wall of Crif (really).
